Periodontal Disease back to our procedures

Periodontium is the collective name for the bone and gum tissues holding your teeth in place. Periodontal disease is an infection of those tissues. It attacks the area just below the gum line where supporting tissues help hold the tooth in place and can reach an advanced stage without any warning symptoms.

There are two major stages of periodontal disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis, which is the milder form, can be reversed. Left unchecked, it can lead to periodontitis, which is more destructive and more difficult to treat.

Diagnosis
Symptoms may signal a periodontal problem but infection can be present without the patient experiencing any of the following:
• gums that are red, swollen, tender or bleed easily
• gums that have pulled away from the teeth
• persistent bad breath or bad taste
• permanent teeth that are loose or separating
• any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
• any change in the fit of partial dentures

Always inform the doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Dr. Roznik will perform a thorough oral examination, including x-rays, to diagnose periodontal disease.

Treatment
Treatment varies depending on the severity of your periodontal disease and may include: frequent professional cleanings, removing calculus deposits from teeth, smoothing root surfaces to aid in gum tissue healing, and removing diseased tissue.

You can reduce the risk of periodontal disease by practicing good oral hygiene at home daily. Brush, clean between your teeth, eat a balanced diet, and schedule regular dental to maintain a healthy mouth.
